"Two Kinds"

 Today, we finished reading "Two Kinds" from The Joy Luck Club. In doing this activity, I learned about the competitiveness within Asian immigrant families, but I also learned how that characteristic can apply to other cultures as well. I liked this activity because I think the book is enjoyable and gives great perspective, in particular with this part of the book, it shows how pressure and demands of an immigrant family may affect a child's way of thinking. On Friday, my family and I will be leaving for the beach, but I'm not very excited about it as we have visited the beach plenty of times before. Instead, I've been quite reminiscent of the concert I went to last week, I've been looking back at the videos I took and wishing I could still be experiencing euphoria.

 The most challenging part of writing an essay for me is the brainstorming. I struggle to actually start the writing process as I often don't have much of an idea to go off. To work on this, I will use various brainstorming methods to help with my creativity. One of the methods I will use is the cluster diagram, which we learned how to use and incorporate in class. Another method I will use to brainstorm will be mind mapping, and with these couple of methods I will improve my brainstorming skills in preparation for this upcoming essay.

Describe when you had a moment of unexpected kindness.

 A moment I experienced unexpected kindness was when I was was little and my family had gone to Walmart. While at Walmart I saw a toy that I wanted and begged my mom to get it for me. She refused to buy it for me as I already had "too many" toys. A stranger was standing by and overheard our argument. He then decided to tell my mom he'd buy it for me, and to this day, I still reminisce that moment. A reminder of the kindness that exists in this world. Today we read and learned about colorism in India. I learned that colorism that similar to racism, mostly synonymous, is discrimination against people of a dark skin tone. Not only does this affect people socially, but economically as they are often denied job opportunities such as in Bollywood, where all the actors have "fair skin".

 Today we read Act One Scene Four of "Fences". We learned about Troy's childhood and the challenges he encountered with his mother leaving when he was young, and himself having to leave his father when he was fourteen. This story took a dark turn that I was not expecting, but it fits in and makes sense to how and why Troy is the way he is. I really hope they cancel school the next couple of days so I can relax at home.
